DR Congo Kivu
The DR Congo SOPACDI Coop was founded in 2003. Before this, farmers in the region had little to no means of transporting their coffee to the markets and instead were forced to simply barter their coffee locally for food, clothing and necessities.
This cooperative was the first to achieve Fair Trade Certification in Congo. Its members represent several different ethnic groups, speaking Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, and Kihavu, and many of the female members are widows.
